Season in review: Ctrl+Alt+Del
Last year I had a true, breakout season: I hit virtually every workout, and made the podium in 12 out of 13 races (all but Age-Group Nationals). I went in to the off-season healthy, and surprisingly still fresh and chomping at the bit to perform even better the next time around. Training went well through the fall and winter, and I even pulled of a couple of PR’s in winter running races.

Itsy Bitsy Spider: Down came the rain and washed the spider out
As I approached a blind curve to the left, I slowed some, as the curve was getting closer. Out of nowhere, a “crotch rocket” type motorcycle zoomed around the curve up ahead. Already over the centerline, he was headed straight for me and coming fast. I had exactly three thoughts. One, I could cut my wheel and get around him on the right side? No way. There’s not enough time or road on the right, and if I made it, I’d be off the mountain because it’s a sharp switchback left. Second thought, can I cut hard to my left and go back into his lane? No. A couple of cars just came around that curve, and there could be another behind. I still remember feeling scared at my last thought - that the only option is to hit him, and this may not end well. But it happened so fast! I still remember the sound!

The more I reflect on my past couple of years, the more I relate to and admire the Itsy Bitsy Spider. The simple childhood rhyme — usually sung with hand motions — of an apparent unlucky, yet determined little spider, sums up my triathlon story so far.

Is your body saying "NO!"?
“My mind is telling me YES, but my body, my body … is telling me NO!!!” Not only does that sound like an R. Kelly song but that somewhat describes my 2011 and 2012 triathlon racing seasons. If you race and train long enough, chances are unfortunately good that you will eventually end up with small or large injuries.
